Shelter in Place

There are a number of emergency situations during which building or facility evacuation is not the best solution and may not be advisable. In such cases, shelter in place may be preferable.

Safety

Safety at the University

The University of Minnesota Duluth campus is like a city within a city. It has its own professional police force, its own building inspectors, and its own environmental health and safety department. It works closely with local law enforcement agencies and state and county law enforcement, as well as with municipal fire departments, to ensure a quick, timely response to emergencies on campus.

Crisis Communication

The University of Minnesota Duluth uses a variety of communication systems to inform the campus community about an emergency situation.

Crime, Threats and Violence

Promoting a Culture of Safety

Emergencies, disasters, accidents, injuries, and crimes can occur without warning at any time. Each member of our community has a role in emergency preparation and response. As an individual, you can help by:

  • Observing your surroundings>
  • Asking about suspicious or questionable behavior,
  • Calling for help when safety is an issue.

Being alert to what's going on around us creates a culture that promotes and enhances security and safety and the openness and accessibility of our campus.

Prevention and Wellbeing

Prevention

During the pandemic, our students, faculty, and staff overwhelmingly made decisions that protected the health and wellbeing of our community. Those choices helped slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and protect our friends, classmates, and colleagues.
